each date starts with "one day" York Events first,
then those outside York, and finally those events going on

Henry VIII: Man and Monarch On Location - This superb touring exhibition highlights events that depict pivotal moments in the life and reign of Henry VIII, showing the man behind the monarch. The exhibition will examine the extraordinary transformations - personal and political, intellectual and religious, literary, aesthetic and linguistic - that took place in Henry's reign, taking us behind the myth and exploring the King's own mind.

The display will be accompanied by an enthralling 'Turning The Pages' interactive kiosk, enabling members of the public to digitally flick through the lavish pages of Henry's Psalter. Through the use of such technology, visitors will be able to read hand written notes, musings and annotations made by the great Tudor monarch. The digital display will also be accompanied by a wonderful facsimile of a Two Part Double Cannon written in honour of the King and in celebration of the Tudor dynasty.

The four week long exhibition at York Minster is supported by items from York Minster's own collections portraying what the Reformation meant to the Minster and how Henry made an impact on its liturgical life. Keith Jones, Dean of York Minster says - "It's very exciting for us to have the 'Henry VIII: Man & Monarch On Location' exhibition at York Minster and we hope that it will appeal to people of all ages."

Sing a Song of Sixpence - Exhibition

Entry is included in admission to the House
Castle Howard's first new exhibition for 2009 is Sing a Song of Sixpence: Children's Picture Books at Castle Howard. This exhibition explores the varied collection of illustrated Victorian children's books at Castle Howard.
This is a wonderful opportunity to explore the richly illustrated pages of the many Victorian children's books normally securely encased within the bookshelves of Castle Howard. It is in children's books that the imagination of the artist and illustrator really took flight – with the power to inspire and enthral readers of all ages! In addition to the imaginative world they represent, they also reveal a fascinating period of technological advancements, social change, and artistic priorities.
The exhibition will be full of vibrant illustrations by artists such as Edward Lear, Walter Crane, Randolph Caldecott, Kate Greenaway, and even George Howard, 9th Earl of Carlisle (1843-1911); a talented artist, and devoted father, and grandfather, he took pleasure in producing paintings and illustrations for his family.
George Howard inherited the management of Castle Howard in 1880, and the title 9th Earl in 1889. He had eleven children, and this is reflected in the enormous resource of children's illustrated books of this period, in the Castle Howard Collection. Both the 9th Earl and Countess equally coveted these books as fine artistic examples.
As an artist George Howard was an astute arbiter of taste and actively involved with the artistic priorities of the period. His own artistic pursuits extended to the illustration and entertainment of his children: he humorously illustrated their family holidays, decorated the envelopes of letters he wrote to them, but most significantly published 'A Picture Song Book' for the 'amusement' of his grandchildren, containing 46 songs illustrated with original drawings by the 9th Earl himself. Many of these original works will be on display."

Five Sisters - A new installation at York St Mary's by Emma Biggs and Matthew Collings

The medieval Five Sisters window in York Minster is the inspiration for a thought provoking installation at York St Mary's this Spring. Five Sisters didn't always look like it does today. It would always have been striking - it is magnificent in size, and powerfully beautiful - but it has been repaired over the centuries, and each repair has brought subtle changes. What does the passage of time give to a work of art, with all the knowledge, labour and value judgments involved in its making and preservation? This is the question that the installation Five Sisters asks.

Created by mosaicist Emma Biggs and art critic and artist Matthew Collings, it will draw on the history locked in the 500,000 pieces of glass that make up the great 13th century window. They will use ten thousand medieval pottery sherds – small pieces of broken ceramic - from the collection of York Museums Trust - to assemble a huge mosaic, covering almost the entire floor space of the church.

Oil paintings, based on the same visual principles, will complement and echo the beautiful muted geometric appearance of the mosaic.

This installation is a way of looking at history. It is impossible for any work of art to express an idea free from a visual tradition, free from the ideology of the past, and the labour of others. Artists are never the sole creators of their work, and Five Sisters asks you to look at the work of the hands that threw the pots, adhered the handles, applied the glaze and stacked the kiln.

But you are also seeing the work of the archaeologists who unearthed these ceramic fragments, volunteers who cleaned them, the art gallery that housed them and the taxpayers who funded their preservation. This work is an accumulation of labour, values, aesthetics, skills and knowledge from the past, remade and re-examined by Biggs and Collings.

Five Sisters is the fifth installation to be commissioned at York St Mary's, a decommissioned medieval church in the heart of York. The installations are created to complement the unique space and draw on its atmospheric surroundings. York St Mary's is open 10am–4pm and free to all.

Duchess of Hamilton "Streamlined" – Styling an era, a new exhibition.

Discover the magnificent Duchess of Hamilton restored to her streamlined form. The locomotive is a stunning piece of Art Deco opulence built in 1938 that wowed design critics on both sides of the Atlantic. The streamlined Duchess was a modern machine for a modern age and can now be viewed at the NRM as she takes pride of place in this new exhibition exploring the links between 1930s fashion, engineering and design. Other streamlined objects will be displayed reflecting the changes in social history and perceptions around the late 1930's.
Back in 1938, locomotive 6229 'Duchess of Hamilton' was built as an express locomotive, resplendent in LMS red; it made a bold statement as a modern machine, for a modern age. Its power and prestige were soon put to work flying the flag for Britain, when in 1939 it took a staring role in the 1939 New York World's Fair. American crowds gawped in amazement at its sleek lines and fashionable carriages, whilst back in Europe, war clouds closed in.
The streamlining process required heavy steel casings to be fitted over the engine's boiler, creating a distinctive curved bullet shape. Although this design epitomised the fashion of the time, it's an open question whether the streamlining process actually brought about any substantial improvement in speed. What is not open to question is the fact that these locomotives were the most powerful steam locomotives ever to run in Britain.
When Duchess returned to a war torn Britain her lavish Art Deco style was replaced with a wartime black livery. In 1946 her streamlined casing was removed, as it made maintenance awkward. Those locomotives that had previously been streamlined were still identifiable by their tapered smoke-box fronts - giving the class its nickname of 'semi-streamlined' or simply 'semi' - but even these were gradually phased out over the next ten years.
Duchess of Hamilton was eventually withdrawn from service in 1963. She had a varied life in preservation, initially as a static exhibit at Butlins in Minehead, before being restored to steam in 1980 by the Friends of the National Railway Museum. She went on to enjoy nearly two decades on the main line before returning to the Museum's Great Hall for display.
Now, after more than 60 years, Duchess of Hamilton is to be restored to her original streamlined design, thanks to support from the Friends of the National Railway Museum and the readers of Steam Railway magazine

Café Scientifique is an informal evening of lively discussion revolving around the contemporary scientific issues of the day. Each meeting begins with a short talk from an invited science-related speaker. This is followed by an hour of open discussion. Everyone is welcome to come and express their views, or to just enjoy a drink and listen. No scientific knowledge is assumed and everyone can participate.

'Better Looking, Better Living, Better Loving' with Dr John Emsley, University of Cambridge.

Dr Emsley previously made a guest appearance in December 2008 and we know from your feedback that you thoroughly enjoyed his talk entitled 'Molecules of Murder'. This time Dr Emsley, will discuss the unassuming role of chemistry in grooming, health, food and personal relationships.

Better Looking, Better Living, Better Loving is about the often unacknowledged role of chemistry in grooming, health, food and personal relationships, which takes the form of the many products that chemists have devised to improve these areas of our life. The science of chemistry has much to be proud of - the challenge for the 21st century is to find ways of ensuring its benefits can be produced from sustainable resources and making it possible for everyone around the world to share them.

Better Looking will focus on the cosmetics and skin treatments which make people feel better about themselves, as well as hair loss which afflicts so many.

Better Living will look at the way in which chemists successfully put an end to a life-long mental illness that once blighted millions of lives, to how they have discovered a new way to make a sweetener which offers the potential of saving lives now and in the future.

Better Loving will focus on the role of chemistry in both recreational and procreational sex – and how it can help when things go wrong.

Finally the talk will look at a new type of career for young chemists, in museums and art galleries, where they are needed to analyse and restore great paintings, and how they are making life very difficult for would-be forgers. 7.30 pm

A new comedy inspired by reminiscences of the Yorkshire Land Army Girls - 'THE LAND GIRLS OF YORKSHIRE'

'Some girls just aren't cut out for farming..' - It's wartime, and there are some new arrivals in the village. They're turning heads and breaking hearts as the fine girls of the Women's Land Army take to the hills.
This brand new show is the latest comedy two-hander from Badapple's resident writer as she celebrates the highs and lows of the wonderful women who helped keep Britain fed during World War II, set against a backdrop of glorious music of the age, as well as new tunes by songwriter Jez Lowe. Although a fictional tale this play owes much to the reminiscences of a number of Land Army Girls who contributed their own personal stories to this exciting new comedy

Journey South - Unplugged

Journey South have come a long way since being runners-up in ITV’s X Factor show. The down-to-earth brothers saw their debut album ‘Journey South’ enter the charts at No.1 going on to sell a massive 500,000 copies in the UK. Next followed their huge sell out UK tour.
2007 saw the band set up its own record label ANCA Records and in October fulfilled their dream of releasing an album of their own songs, ‘Home’. The album was very successful on the back of the emotive first single ‘What I Love About Home’.
Journey South are now going back to their roots by stripping right back to a totally acoustic sound and much more personal show. Be prepared for their stunning voices, perfectly matched harmonies and melodic guitar, plus a few surprises!
After the success of their sell-out show at Helmsley Arts Centre last year, this is a show not to be missed!

House Concerts present - Lucy Wainwright Roche
Lucy is the 27-year-old daughter of the singer-songwriters Loudon Wainwright III and Suzzy Roche of the Roches.
Her half-brother is the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright, her half-sister is singer-songwriter Martha Wainwright and her stepmother was the Canadian singer-songwriter Kate McGarrigle of the McGarrigle Sisters. That's a lot of singer-songwriters for one family. "It never ends," Lucy laughed. "It goes on and on."
With two promising EPs to her credit that got rave reviews from the New York Times and National Public Radio, Lucy is the second generation of her family in the music business and a fast-rising newcomer on the indie-folk scene. She comes to music a great deal later than her brother and sister, beginning her career after teaching second and third grade for three years in New York.
After her parents split up when she was 2, Lucy spent weekends and summers away from her Greenwich Village home, going on the road with her mother and aunts, who perform together in the sister group the Roches. "I loved that," she recalled. "I was really, really into it. Hanging out with my mom and my aunts when I was a kid was like a traveling circus with all the people I liked the best. It was my favorite thing to do."
Be that as it may, when she graduated from high school she went off to Oberlin College in Ohio to become a teacher rather than the next in the long line of singer-songwriters in the family. With most kids, becoming a musician rather than going to college is a form of rebellion. Coming from her family, it was the other way around.
"With a family like mine, everyone wondered why I was going to school," she snickered. "But music was such a huge part of my life that when I went off to school I didn't really think I needed to do it, too, since I was around it all the time. Then when I got further into my own life I realized that it wasn't in my life as much anymore, that music was their life and not mine. That's when I started to miss it. And that's how I came back to it."
That happened four years ago, when she agreed to go on tour with her flamboyant brother Rufus as a backup singer. "I think he could see in me that I was aching to do it," she said. "He pushed me over the edge when he asked me to go on the road with him. And, sure enough, I didn't want to go back to my teaching job after that."
She had to go back, for one more year, but since then she's hit the ground running, touring with Dar Williams, Neko Case, Mary Gauthier and, most unexpectedly for her, Loudon Wainwright III, her father.

York Early Music Festival 2009 - John Butt Lecture

BACH'S ST JOHN PASSION: theological statement or music drama? - Bach's smaller Passion is frequently analysed for its apparent theological symbolism and meaningful structures, yet it is also one of the most strikingly dramatic pieces Bach ever wrote, verging in places on the violent. John Butt, Chair of Music at Glasgow University, weighs up the two sides of this argument. Can such music truly be appreciated outside the religious context, or does the attention paid to its possible meanings detract from its musical quality? SOLD OUT

Swinging the Classics with Tim Kliphuis – Violin Len Skeat – Bass and Dave Newton – piano

Dutchman Tim Kliphuis ranks among the world’s finest jazz violinists, often named as the successor to Stephane Grappelli. Tim’s spirit and style are reminiscent of the late, great jazz fiddler: virtuoso playing with a great love for melody.
He has performed with many leading jazzmen, fiddlers and gypsy guitarists. Tonight he explores the myriad classical arrangements he has perfected over the years, including Bach’s Erbarme Dich, Grieg’s Solveig’s Song, Handel’s Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, Liszt’s Liebestraum No 3, and many others. His new book, Grappelli – Gypsy Jazz Violin, has recently been published.

Salsa? Jazz? Funk? Soul? Cuban-born pianist, Roberto Fonseca combines all these styles and more. The greatest talent to emerge from Havana in recent years, his style is influenced by music and artists from all over the world, resulting in a sound that crosses boundaries, fuses traditions and is – well – just cool. He’s admired by such greats as Herbie Hancock, his compositions feature in a number of films, including 2008’s ‘Hancock’ and he’s got a style you won’t hear anywhere else. Give it a try. You won’t regret it.

Its origins in the growing instrumental virtuosity and dramatic flair of early 17th-century Italy, and its later successful but recognisably personal adoption by Purcell, are explored by this brilliant Danish ensemble. York Early Music Festival 2009 - Schubert Die Winterreise - CONCERT BY CANDLELIGHT with Matthew Brook bass Peter Seymour fortepiano

Schubert’s most substantial song-cycle Die Winterreise charts the bleak journey of a rejected lover, wandering the winter landscape, weighed down by memories of his lost sweetheart, and longing for death. Almost an operatic monologue in miniature, its profound atmosphere and searching psychological expression make it one of the great artistic highpoints of the 19th century.

Today Robert Hollingworth continues this theme in his ‘Tallis in Wonderland’ programme - 7.00 pm today and 8.00 pm on 16th July. SOLD OUT

Jean-Féry Rebel’s suite Les Elemens is a musical representation of the birth of the world, from the opening depicting Chaos in dramatic dissonances to the refined elegance the dance movements that follow. Works commemorating a death are also well represented in French Baroque music; Couperin’s apothéose, included in this programme, pays homage to the father of French music, Lully.

The Black Death is an epidemiological mystery. Felipe suggests new solutions, while setting 14th century musical responses to death in startling long-term contexts: the environmental crisis and lurches of global climate that inaugurated and sustained an “age of plague” in Eurasia, and the consequences for the global balance of power and wealth.

How many valiant men, how many fair ladies, breakfast with their kinsfolk and the same night sup with their ancestors in the next world!’ (Boccaccio). The Black Death swept across Europe in the mid 1300s, killing an estimated half of the population. Poets and musicians responded violently: blaming the Jews, lamenting their own fates, or ignoring their dreadful future by revelling in love, lust and gluttony. Tonight’s programme reflects these varied responses through Hebrew chants, penitential Minnesinger prayers and Machaut’s sublime love songs.

The difficulty with listening to Renaissance polyphony is in hearing anything more than a beautiful wash of sound from one end of a building. The processes of the intricately interdependent lines and their emotional impact are usually lost. Does it matter? Wasn’t church music composed to glorify God rather than to be understood? Tallis in Wonderland is a new piece inspired by this problem and features six live singers, sound installation and music by Tallis, Josquin, Gombert, Manchicourt, Byrd, Rore, Palestrina, Gesualdo and Monteverdi.
