We make no claim that the Events listing below is a
comprehensive listing of all that is "going-on" in York,
but rather a selection of Events that we would possibly attend
- given the time....

Being slightly biased,
each date starts with "one day" York Events first,
then those outside York, and finally those events going on
for more than just the one day.

Exhibition - Duty Calls: Castle Howard in Time of War.

Exhibition inside the House. While generations of Howard sons went to fight overseas the impact of war was often more powerfully felt at home.

Between 1815 and 1944 five Howards were killed in action, and for the family war was a time of anxiety as well as bereavement; this was an experience shared with staff and tenants, many of whom are commemorated on war memorials in estate villages. Belgian refugees, enemy prisoners ,evacuees, fire, crashed aircraft, and horses commandeered for the front meant that the impact of war was never far away from Castle Howard.

From Waterloo to World War II, this exhibition explores the stories of Castle Howard in the time of war.

Art & Crafts Workshops - Wildflowers in Watercolour.

Guided by the Artist and Tutor, paint your own watercolour of wildflowers in the very stunning and special surroundings of the Yorkshire Arboretum.

Early summer is a very special time to visit the Yorkshire Arboretum at Castle Howard, and what better way to record your impression of the unique flowers that grow there in colourful profusion against a backdrop of beautiful trees, than with paint, paper and inspiration on this very special one day course.

There will be guidance on composition and colour mixing, with plenty of tips, creative techniques and demonstrations from the Artist and Tutor Susan Neale.

All art materials will be provided on the day, however should you wish to bring your own then please do. Also you can enjoy a homemade, truly scrumptious Yorkshire Cream tea.

The Yorkshire Arboretum is an inspiring venue for all levels of ability and after an initial tour we will (weather permitting) be painting outside to produce a picture to be proud of.

York Racecourse presents - The June Meeting.

Enjoy top class racing whilst raising money for charity.

Since 1971 this event has now raised in the region over £5.5 million for good causes and provided some fantastic racing excitement. Just by attending the day, racegoers will be helping to raise money for charities, one of which is Macmillan Cancer Support. Macmillan provides practical, medical and, emotional support as well as pushing for better cancer care.

The feature race of Saturday is the most valuable sprint handicap for three year old horses in Europe, the Macmillan Charity Sprint Trophy. There is a special thrill in cheering home your winning selection surrounded by thousands of people and a Saturday provides that excitement.

This year we are also offering those who ride horses for fun the chance to fulfill a dream by competing in a race on the famous Knavesmire. Participants in the third Macmillan Charity Race will also be raising money for the charity that has been a partner to York for over forty years.

The lawns and champagne terraces provide a great place to celebrate or commiserate, now that summer is with us.

The first race time on Friday is set that little bit later which allows many people to wind down to the weekend by coming racing after a morning at work.

'The Tiger And The Moustache'.

Born on the very first day of a new nation, Hashi, the girl who always smiles, grew up surrounded by flying tigers in the Sunderban jungles.

Saikat Ahamed traces the journey of Hashi, his mother, and the emerging nation of Bangladesh. Travel with him, as he slides in and out of time from the agonies of Partition in 1947 right up to the present day, as we board fishing boats up the Megna River and rickshaws along the dusty roads of Dacca.

From East London to East Bengal, the story of Bangladesh is woven together through storytelling, theatre, live music, dance and a healthy amount of humour.

Kula Productions present - AN INTIMATE EVENING WITH RICHARD DIGANCE.

Many people sing, play guitar and tell stories but not many have supported Steve Martin, Robin Williams or played a guitar duet with Brian May of Queen, Richard Digance has.

"Richard Digance, hilarious, sentimental, irreverent and, above all, ours" - Mike Atherton

Richard Digance is a rare performer in that he's respected by comedians for his original material and by musicians for being an accomplished performer/guitarist. His loyal following confirms his wide appeal, from the younger generation attracted by both his guitar playing and the fact he has inspired many modern-day performers, to the super-loyal who have followed Richard since the time he had his own ITV series and even further when he started out in folk clubs.

His evergreen career has been acknowledged through numerous awards within both the music and entertainment industries, from a BAFTA Nomination as a TV entertainer to a Gold Award from The British Academy of Composers and Songwriters. He is included in The Virgin Anthology of Songwriters for his important contribution to British comedy songwriting.

Richard Digance is also a world-acclaimed poet, an author and an artist. His poetry is published around the world, from The University of British Columbia, Canadian syllabus for English; Fearndon Teaching Aids, Illionois, USA, The Oxford University Anthology of Poetry, The West Indies Schools syllabus and more recently in Australia and in Cape Town South Africa as part of English First Additional Language Grade 8 Reader.

He has survived all trends with his two and a half hour one-man show, his summer festival appearances in the UK, the United States, Canada and Dubai, his cruise work and television appearances. He is both an accomplished musician, rated by many as one of Britain's greatest acoustic guitarists, inspired by his good friend Ralph McTell, and an entertainer who many younger comedians, including Ross Noble, claim as one of their major influences. On his own ITV Saturday-night show Richard has played guitar with Queen's Brian May, The Moody Blues, Status Quo, Chris deBurgh, Juan Martin, Marc Cohn and Elkie Brooks.

Kula Productions present - CHRISTINE BOVILL A CELEBRATION OF THE LIFE AND WORKS OF EDITH PIAF.

A live performer with a voice once described as 'a sonic combination of dark chocolate and cigarettes', Christine Bovill has built her acclaimed reputation throughout the UK on her interpretation of classic 20th century songs.

Developing a hugely successful show around the works of Edith Piaf, Christine has won many accolades in the world of chanson. Last summer saw Christine reach new heights with her PIAF show and a massively successful sold-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe. Most remarkable, however, was the appearance of Charles Dumont, Piaf's great friend and composer of Non Je ne Regrette Rien. Making the journey from Paris to perform for one exclusive night, Christine and Charles performed several songs, including Piaf's great epitaph. In her own words, an all time career high.

She received rave reviews from the critics, including a 5 star rating from The Scotsman, "Bovill is a great storyteller and she brings the songs to life with terrific panache and dramatic flair. [She] ensures that the audience gets the full emotional impact of every tune. By the final song she looks utterly ravaged and emotionally drained."

Always devoted to the power of the lyric, Christine decided a decade ago to begin writing her own material. In a short space of time, guitar in hand, she put together a collection of songs whose origins lie somewhere in a tangle of Jazz, Blues, Folk, Country and Cajun. In December of 2007, Christine's own song Lighthouse Keeper won the Glasgow Festival of Songwriting.

With the release of her first album Derby Street, championed pre-release as album of the week by Radio Scotland, Christine revealed a major talent as a songwriter. She is in the process of recording her second album.

'A Taste Of Honey' - A touching tale of a young girl’s journey into adulthood.

We’re unique…. Young…. Unrivalled…. Smashing!

Salford 1959 – 17 year old Jo is desperate to break free from her vulgar, wayward and man hunting mother, Helen.

Resilient and feisty, Jo’s instinct for survival and happiness leads her to a taste of honey when she falls in love with Jimmy, a black Sailor on shore leave. Abandoned by her Mother and left to cope on her own, Jo’s courage is tested yet again when Jimmy returns to sea, and she discovers she’s pregnant.

Defiant in the face of convention, Jo moves in with her friend Geoffrey, a young Art student, who assumes the role of surrogate father to her unborn child. As their relationship deepens, Jo discovers that her independent spirit is both her torment and her salvation.

One of the most influential plays of its generation, A Taste of Honey was written when Shelagh Delaney was only 18. It burst onto the stage in 1961 in a production that took the West End by storm. Part of the post war kitchen sink movement the play later became a classic of British cinema.

Directed by Mark Babych in his debut production as Hull Truck Theatre’s new Artistic Director.

Ebor Lectures - The Morality of Austerity.

We live in the 'Age of Austerity'. The global financial crisis has left governments with levels of debt and budget deficits which are unsustainable in the long term and most have opted to reduce public services and welfare payments as a consequence. Austerity, however, adversely affects the most vulnerable members of society, changes public expectations and potentially alters the relationship between the citizen and the state. In the Ebor Lectures for 2013-14 we take the question raised by Jim Wallis, the American theologian and activist, 'What would Jesus cut?' and use it as a way of evaluating economic austerity from a theological and moral perspective. Is austerity the only way of addressing the need for deficit-reduction? What might the moral alternatives to austerity be? And are we really all in this together?

Tonight - Mr Jon Cruddas MP, Labour Member of Parliament for Dagenham & Rainham, Member of Shadow Cabinet, speaks on 'The common good in an era of austerity’

York Racecourse presents - The John Smith's Cup Meeting.

The informal party highlight of the year combines betting excitement and summer fun.

The Friday of the meeting offers a great start to a weekend of high quality racing as it contains the Group 3 Summer Stakes as well as the chance to relax into the weekend. Several of the other races are also supported by brands that are backing the charity of the grocery industry, GroceryAid; it all makes for an exciting day.

Ever since it was first run in 1960, the John Smith’s Cup has had a story to tell; 2013 saw William Haggis reclaim the title with Danchai after previously winning in 2011 with Green Destiny. This horse went on to win two Group 3 races including one on the Knavesmire.

Who will land the six figure prize and unique Wedgwood trophy this year? In the past finding the answer has produced some of the biggest gambles to hit the bookmakers; the roar when the favourite hits the front is spine tingling. A racegoer with an eye on the future can also pick up tips.

The support of the Tadcaster brewer makes this the longest running sponsorship on the flat anywhere in the world and the event is one of Yorkshire’s finest.

To celebrate the occasion, RAF Linton-on-Ouse have carried out a flypast over the Knavesmire using its Tucano aircraft in previous years; look out on this website for confirmation of this year’s plans.

York Racecourse presents - The Music Showcase Weekend.

The two days of the Music Showcase Weekend every July have become popular with racing and music fans alike.

This year the musical entertainment on Saturday 26 July will see Wet Wet Wet play on a giant trackside stage after the final race has finished. They are one of the UK’s most successful artists to date and have produced some of the country’s best loved pop songs, including hits such as ‘Sweet Little Mystery’, ‘Wishing I Was Lucky’ and ‘Goodnight Girl’. The four-piece band have charted three number one singles and sold in excess of 15 million singles and albums to date, since their debut album, ‘Popped In Souled Out’, went to number one in 1987. Wet Wet Wet’s biggest international hit was ‘Love Is All Around’, which featured on the soundtrack to the film ‘Four Weddings and A Funeral’ and topped the UK charts for a record breaking 15 weeks in 1994.

Action on the track on Saturday sees the Sky Bet York Stakes, a Group Two race with £100,000 in prize money so it attracts a field from the top stables; Sir Michael Stoute and Saeed bin Suroor have provided recent winners for this all age middle distance contest. A full field is likely to contest the prime betting heat of the afternoon, the £50,000 Sky Bet Dash, a six furlong handicap. A fitting part of the Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival.

Music Showcase Evening is the only evening of York’s year on Friday July 25th combining competitive racing with live music. The European Breeders' Fund Lyric Stakes is a Listed contest to reward talented fillies. The music performance for the Friday evening is still to be confirmed, so keep watching the website for details.

York Racecourse presents - The Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival.

Our oldest, richest, fastest, and most famous races provide sporting excellence combined with fashion and fun over four fabulous days.

Fashion is always prominent at the Ebor, we will keep you updated on this year’s plans for celebrating this here. The traditional highlight of the season on the Knavesmire will commence on Wednesday 20 August and run for four days, finishing once again with the Betfred Ebor on Saturday.

Wednesday 20th August - Juddmonte International

The prestigious Group One Juddmonte International will remain as the highlight of the opening day, a contest regularly ranked in the top ten middle distance contests in the world and won in 2012 by Frankel, considered by some as the best thoroughbred in history and certainly the highest ranked on the planet so far. Last year, there was a Declaration Of War on the richest prize ever at York by the Ballydoyle team.

For many racegoers the opening day of the festival is the day when they catch up with friends and look forward to a week of shared enjoyment. Form followers will watch the Neptune Investment Management Great Voltigeur with particular interest as this York Group Two has already produced thirteen winners of the final Classic of the year, the St. Leger. The racecourse team looks forward to this day and everything is fresh and exciting.

Thursday 21st August - Darley Yorkshire Oaks & Ladies Day

On all four days there will be a real sense of fashion, plenty of hats and sharp suits mixed with those sporting more relaxed summer clothing, however for many there remains an extra special feel about Thursday as it is Ladies Day. As in previous years, the best dressed racegoers have the chance to win a trip to Dubai courtesy of Marriott Hotels. The sporting action attracts the best fillies as the Group One Darley Yorkshire Oaks and the Group 2 Connolly's RED MILLS Lowther Stakes are highly treasured titles.

Friday 22nd August - Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes

Friday offers the chance to race into the weekend, perhaps enjoying a short break in historic York or the wider White Rose county (click here for more information on staying in Yorkshire). The fastest race of the season, the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes, often decides the accolade of leading sprinter and is a blur of colour that needs to be seen and heard to be believed. In 2012, the successful Australian raider, Ortensia, who took the crown with a stunning turn of foot close to home.

Saturday 23rd August - Betfred Ebor Day

The feature race of the Saturday is the Betfred Ebor, the oldest, and probably most famous race at York and the richest flat handicap in Europe. The excitement that this famous handicap generates has been constant since the 1840s; Mudawin a winner at over 100-1, Sergeant Cecil, a victor who became horse of the year, Purple Moon who landed a nationwide gamble and then headed down under and very nearly became the first British trained winner of the Melbourne Cup, a flying dismount from Frankie - and that’s just in its recent history. The buzz about the racecourse on Ebor day is infectious as groups of friends enjoy, relax and hopefully unravel the puzzle to find the winner of the Betfred Ebor.

Photography Workshops - Photography Masterclass Rooftops & Architecture.

A unique opportunity to gain access to the rooftops of York, and capture the changing evening skyline from a exclusive vantage point.

This small group evening workshop will take place in the beautiful Mansion House in the centre of York. We will have the unique opportunity to gain access to the rooftop to capture the night sky and some spectacular views across the city. Light refreshments and a buffet tea will be served in the Mansion House's Blue Room and your tutor for the evening, professional photographer John Potter B.Ed.(HONS.) L.R.P.S, will instruct you throughout the workshop.

You will learn: How to change ISO and white balance settings; control exposure and depth of field, selecting the best aperture; gain a better understanding of the histogram and how to improve it; how to use a tripod together with a cable release (or self timer), and how to create architectural and low light images. John will show you a wide range of both architectural and landscape images all taken in low light. Whether its star trail pictures and the night sky, low light coastal landscapes, or twilight images of York's stunning rooftops, he can illustrate and explain how its done.

After taking photographs from the rooftop, John will spend a little time illustrating some basic photo editing/enhancing using Adobe Photoshop Element and CS5, before going into York centre to photograph the city streets and the Shambles. Finally, you will be presented with a selection of some of John's distinctive greetings cards as a memento of your special evening.

Please note: You must bring your digital camera, with a fully charged battery and an empty/formatted memory card. It is also advisable to bring your camera's instruction manual, and a tripod if you have one or can borrow one. A torch will be very useful too!

Prior to the workshop you might like to experiment using Aperture Priority Mode ("A" or "AV") on your cameras command dial, and try a range of aperture settings in different situations.

Friday means the return of Countryside Raceday, a celebration of countryside activity and produce. Last year we delighted in seeing Maisie the sheepdog herd a gaggle of geese down the track or taking the chance to get close to the birds of prey displayed by eagle eyed falconry. The Countryside Market also proved an easy way to get some early Christmas treats.

In recent years, Saturday has become the busiest weekend raceday of the month nationwide so there continues to be a buzz about the grandstands. The Coldstream Guards Pipe and Drum Band have been regular performers during the afternoon and bring the curtain down on the season in rousing style as they mark the Coldstream Guards Association Stakes. Look out on the website as their plans are confirmed for 2014.

Most of us love the anticipation and carnival atmosphere of a big sporting occasion. Yet there is also something nice about the relaxed pace of a raceday that offers the chance to catch up with friends whilst enjoying easy access to some of the best views and facilities on the turf. These have been called our “undiscovered gems” and the October Friday fits this description.

Food & Drink Workshops - A Basket Full of Bread - Traditional Bread Making.

Spend a day in the kitchen at the beautiful Mansion House creating a wide range of sweet and savoury breads using traditional methods.

Spend a day making bread using traditional methods in the kitchens of the beautiful Mansion House in the centre of York. The Mansion House is the official residence of the Lord Mayor of York and has been entertaining guests for over 300 years. You will be given a guided tour of the house and have lunch in one of its elegant drawing rooms. At the end of the day, you'll have the lovely food you've made to take home and enjoy.

With a few basic ingredients and a little kneading, you'll create a range of delicious home-baked sweet and savoury breads such as soda bread, cheese and onion tear and share bread, herb and walnut rolls and raisin and cinnamon buns.

The workshop includes:-

• Demonstrations of the cooking techniques
• Hands-on cooking in the morning and afternoon
• All the ingredients and use of equipment you need to make the recipes
• Refreshments and lunch in one of the elegant drawing rooms
• A tour of the house (time permitting)

Layered clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended.

All you need to bring is yourself and some containers in which to take home your wonderful creations.

The kitchen at the Mansion House has been a working kitchen for many years and reflects the different time periods it has lived through. The Curator is keen to restore some of the kitchen's features to their former character. By attending this workshop, you will be contributing towards the funding of the restoration of the kitchen.
